In January of this year we welcomed a new member to our Browne & Co. sales team and with manufacturing companies opening up again, it's about time we introduce you to Jeff Terrace!

Jeff graduated from Ohio University with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 2008.  He started his professional career at Lincoln Electric in Euclid, OH as a process & project engineer in the machining and mechanical parts group.  He was tasked with new product development for all the machined parts in the plant as well as new equipment implementation and process improvement.

After Lincoln Electric, Jeff joined the application engineering team at Ingersoll Cutting Tools in both the general marketplace and Automotive division.  The majority of his time at Ingersoll was spent working with local manufacturing companies as well as the Big Three automakers on custom tooling applications  for high and low volume production, custom carbide, CBN and PCD tooling.

Rocky Mountain Drills Single Cell Production Methods

10/15/2014

Advancements through technology and process improvements have placed Rocky Mountain Twist as the quality leader of industrial drill bit manufacturing.

Until recently the process of grinding a drill bit from a solid high-speed steel blank has changed very little over the years.
A drill bit produced using traditional manufacturing methods is ground in multiple remote operations within a batch. After each shaping operation the drill bits must be moved “manually” to the next machine. This process is repeated until bits are completely ground.

Therein lies the problem, each time a drill bit moves from one operation to the next, the bit has to be reoriented within a fixture. This constant reorientation can create variances of critical dimensions in one bit to the next. These variations in geometry translate to reduced performance and inconsistencies in hole size.

Picture
At Rocky Mountain Twist, each of their proprietary drill grinding cells transform solid high-speed steel blanks into finished drill bits without leaving the cell. Using revolutionary rotary methodology, a drill blank is oriented once, then moves through each manufacturing phase in a precise computer controlled operation. This process innovation ensures the highest degree of repeatable quality manufacturing in the industry.
