The Industrial Supply Association named JIS (Jergens Industrial Supply) of Cleveland the winner of the American Eagle Excellence in Industry Award at its 2014 Convention in New Orleans on May 17. The award recognized how JIS Industrial Supply created a productivity and technology partnership with a customer, Slabe Machine Products, to free up machine time and reduce total tool costs. Working in conjunction with the rep firm Browne & Company, Chardon, Ohio, and carbide cutting tools manufacturer Fullerton Tool Company of Saginaw, Mich., JIS helped Slabe Machine reduce machine time, extend tool life and lower total tooling cost. The program, which took several weeks to implement, generated total savings of more than $480,000. “When a true partnership is formed at all levels of the supply chain, amazing things can happen,” said Jack Schron, president of Jergens Inc. “By using these partnership programs, JIS, Browne & Company and Fullerton Tool are confident that we can become true leaders in partnering with local businesses by providing leading edge technology and productivity gains to keep manufacturing strong in the USA.”
The Excellence In Industry Award recognizes companies in the MROP channel for their commitment to driving value to channel partners. Qualified candidates demonstrate excellence in one or more areas, including: communicating with channel partners, introducing innovative products and services that create new business opportunities, developing effective marketing programs to drive sales, or showing exemplary leadership and service in partnership with charitable and community organizations. JIS, a division of Jergens Inc., is a distributor of metalworking products representing more than 300 of the top manufacturers in the United States. Jergens Inc. is a manufacturer of standard tooling components, fasteners, hoist rings, vices and other workholding equipment. ISA is the leading association of the maintenance, repair, operations and production (MROP) supply chain, serving more than 1,200 member locations in North America. ISA’s mission is to provide all members with services to help them increase sales, decrease expenses and increase profitability. Lexington Cutter proudly accepted the 2007 American Eagle Award for Value Added Manufacture at the 2007 ISA Conference and Trade Show in Las Vegas. This prestigious award was presented as a result of the dramatic cost savings documented to Briggs and Stratton’s Alabama plant. Lexington Cutter’s Vice President of Sales Junita St Esprit and Vice President of Technical Services Jim Trammell were invited by Jason Mathis of Max Tool to evaluate an application at Briggs and Stratton. The goal was to reduce tooling cost in a project that used custom carbide step drills on large runs of cast iron flywheels. Lexington Cutter designed a custom carbide tipped step drill that was priced nearly 50 percent lower than the previous drill used by Briggs and Stratton, but achieved 10 times the performance. The tool produced 11,000 parts per tool, compared to just 1,100 parts for the tool it replaced. The previous tool generated a tooling cost of $0.454 per part, compared to just $0.0262 per part for the new tool, for a total monthly savings of $12,850. |
